The One Minute Farbringen

Parshat Yitro

"Hearing the surging of the sea- 100 miles away!
Most surfers have experienced the high of accelerating on a "wall" of water, arcing turns on the face of a wave. What would be the reaction if the "Wall" suddenly stopped still? How much more impressive would this "wave" then be?

This fascinating question comes up in this week's Torah portion, Yitro. He is a priest of Midian, an expert of every type of idol worship there is, testifying after the tumultuous series of events concerning the Exodus from Egypt, to the greatness of G-d over all other types of deities. This former idol worshipper is magnanimously awarded a torah portion in his name, something that Moses, the greatest prophet of all time, did not merit! What did he "hear" and why did this make him great?"

The Torah tells us that Yitro"heard" about the miracles in Egypt, yet the Baal Turim (18-1) informs us that first and foremost, Yitro heard about the surging and roaring of the parting of the Red Sea, which reverberated in courts of all kings, from "East to West". Though he was aware of all other travails of the plagues, the miraculous war against Amalek, and the Mannah falling from Heaven, it was the surf that caught his ear! Something to think about.

A Shabbath Shalom to all !!
