The world of surfing is a visual feast of colors, shades, even dark
shadows (on big days!). From the "rooster-tail," off-shore spray of Sunset
Beach to the emerald-blue glass of the Ranch, the senses are treated to the
greatest show on Earth each time one paddles out into G-d's most wondrous
creation. And we work hard to enjoy it all! Master's swimming, triathlete
training, weights-all in an effort to increase our stamina when it gets
good.
As this column has often pointed out, the world of the surfer is an
exclusive club where the sensual (spiritual) is interwoven with the
physical. Yet we clearly see that the visual sense is predominant over the
physical, for without sight, physicality ceases to be a focal point.
The Kabbalists tell us that sight is closely connected to the
spiritual aspects of the soul, to the point that observing an ocurrence can
have a greater impact on ones psyche than actually committing an act, or
even speaking about it. On the one hand, we learn from this week's Tora
portion about the commandment requiring us to stay fit and prevent bodily
injury. In the same breath, however, the term "diligently" is used to
emphasize our responsability with matters of the soul (Kli Yakar, 4-9).
If one learns or hears about something that can benefit him both
physically and spiritually, perhaps at a later date someone could attempt
to disprove his previous knowledge. When he sees, however, with his own
eyes that something is true, then this has the most lasting effect ( Ramban
4-9).
Seeing is everything!
So stay in shape and definitely be "diligent" in spiritual matters!
Shabbat Shalom to all!
