Surfers represent the truest balance in life: on the one hand, they possess a recognition of the wonder and awe of the mightiest aspect of Creation; on the other hand, they deal with the nuts and bolts of making and living and family matters. How many people have the opportunity to paddle out into the hollow barrels of the Pipeline in the morning, and later on, show up (WITH suit and tie) to work at the office, with boss and colleagues totally unaware of the metamorphosis!
This week's Torah portion informs us that Zevulon was happy going out to sea, being a part of the challenge of the ocean: "rejoice, Zevulon, in thy going out....(to sea)" (35-18). But the business partnership that he had with his brother was a bit more profound than we find in the world of finance: Zevulon was happy at sea since knew that his success was guaranteed by him supporting his brother's spiritual quest in the study of his Torah ( Kli Ha Yakar). A perfect symbiosis: Surf and Soul!
With the closing of this chapter, we begin anew our "Surf and Soul" odyssey, starting next week with the exciting dawn of creation in the book of "Genesis". Stay tuned!
