Malibu, the Aloha Spirit, and Abraham's tent
Years ago, Malibu surfers had a problem: there was no one to surf with! (we hope you're sitting down while you digest this thought!). Back then, the guys used to take the arduous journey from Santa Monica (at low tide) on the weekend and surf with a handful of old faithfuls. "The Boards," Tom Zahn once told me, "were left right there on the beach and would remain there untouched when we returned."
Those were the days of the "aloha" spirit, when surfers used to grab someone, anyone, take him to the beach, help him out, provide lodging, and yes, even share boards. This was active "networking", not just waiting from someone to come around.
This week's torah portion was no doubt on the minds of those original, old-time Malibu surfers. Our father, Abraham ( the "father of many nations") wasn't content with waiting in the desert for someone to come by, he actively looked for his next guests. Our sages tell us that the receiving of guests in one's home is a more important act that even greeting the divine presence.
