"Punta de Mita and Faith!"
F or every surfer that has visited in Mexico, there's a classic tale to tell: from the jeep that gets bogged down in sand for days without water to incredible legends of mosquitos the size of golf balls and reports of 20 waves at the Mexican "Pipeline"!
Talk to anyone that's ever surfed the "Mexican Malibu" at Punta de Mita ( just North of Vallarta) in the late 60's and early 70's, and you'll get a yarn or two! On land, if the marrauding pigs didn't run roughshod over your gear, tent, and food, then the scorpions would conspire to finish you off! In the water, the sharks provided the surfer with a real chance to play Russian roulette- without bullets!
If you survived the day, the cops from nearby Compostela would routinely drop by at night to say "hi" and assess who had what! At Mita, only the faithful survived ! Weeks would go by sometimes without so much as a ripple. But when you pull up on that long, classic point set-up, and as the morning onshore wind straightens out to a direct offshore breeze, each day like clockwork, turning the azure-blue water into the texture of Hawaiian-type conditions, the mind rambles about what it would be like, if...........!
Faith to stick it out, knowing that it is only a matter of time, not giving up, that the whole situation could change overnight- that's faith! The surfers at Mita no doubt would be impressed with one of the greatest stories of faith: Purim! "Nahafochu"- the situation changed around 180 degrees. One moment, there's sadness and despair, the next, joy and happiness!
So the next time you pull up to Punta de Mita and it looks like a swimming pool, think of the miracles of long ago in the ancient kingdom of Persia, and be of good faith- you never know what tomorrow will bring!!
