The One Minute Farbringen

Surf and Soul's "One Minute Farbringen"
Parshat Nitzavim-V'Yelech
Hawaiian quivers and the New Year

Years ago, on the North shore of Oahu, Hawaii, the term "quiver" was used to designate a large number of surfboards, each board for a specific wave condition. The surfer only then was considered "complete", able to use equipment for 2 ft. waves, all the way up to the huge rollers at Sunset and Waimea Bay, 20 ft. and more.

He needs ALL the boards, a shortage of which would represent a deficiency in the "completeness" of his preparedness in the ocean. In sum, each board is just as important as the rest, from the smallest to the biggest.

As we approach the awesome day of our New Year, we can reflect on this week's Torah reading and the "completeness" of all our people as a whole, with literally no one left out. We are told of the absolute nature of this unity:"...from the tribal heads, your sages, bailiffs,......babys, women....from woodcutters to drawers of water."All gather together, year after year, "on this day," from the most righteous to the most simple, to give thanks for the bounty of the past year as well as make a reckoning of past deeds.

We, at Jewish Surfers International, wish all our subscribers, fellow surfers, and friends, a prosperous new year, a year full of "surf" complimented with "soul"- the ultimate quiver!

May you and your family be inscribed and sealed in the coming year for all good things.

Aloha and Shalom, Nachum
