"Corky Carroll, The Zohar, and Sunset Beach"
On surfing the huge peak at Sunset Beach on the North Shore of Oahu, famous surfer, waterman, and now movie star Corky Carroll explained: "No matter how many times I paddle out, I still get a lump in my throat!"
Truly, the whole scenario at Sunset defies explanation. As you wax your board on the coarse, volcanic sand, you can see the thundering peak falling from a distance of nearly a half mile away, with huge plumes of spray blowing off the tops from the off-shore wind. Loose boards in the roaring rip-tide, taken out to sea...on their way to the outer island of Kauai, ant-like dots scramble to reach the outside sets on some non-descript reef, where giant walls of water threaten to blot out any "fun" that may have been planned for that surf session! And when, and if, you're finally in position to ride the avalanche-like peak, with it's elevator-shaft drop, you find you're half blinded by the spray shooting into our eyes as you prepare your descent!
Just another of the multitude of "experiences" that make the North Shore a personal test in overcoming human limitations and fear. Corky would no doubt agree about the message of this week's Torah portion, "Ki Tetze, where the war therein described is actually a battle to overcome ones personal limitations and inclinations ( Kli Hayakar and Likutei Torah on the Zohar). Or in the vernacular, "we've met the enemy, and it is us!" That's the REAL message in the Sunset line-up!!
