"Malibu, Light, and Extinguishing Darkness"
Night surfing at Malibu? If you didn't know, there's a new trend in the sport whereby surfers seek to avoid crowds, parking hassles, and day-time worries. Aside from being aided by the full moon, some people even go so far as to wear night-lights, resembling those used by coal miners, to navigate their way through those dark barrels and sections at the world -famous point break.
It seems that surfers, some of the most innovative people around, have taken the lead, in a way, in "publicizing the miracle" of light at this very special time of year, the miracle of Chanuka. The whole holiday revolves around lights, and is nicknamed the "Festival of Lights", hinting at the thousands of candles lit each night all over the land.
We are quite lucky to be involved in a sport whose essence focuses on light, and freedom, so symbolic of the holiday of Chanukah. A wall of darkness, the Kabbalists tell us, can be breeched by one single candle. A tiny amount of light is all it takes to disperse a tremendous amount of darkness, whether it be through night lights or the Light of Torah ( "Torah Ohr"- Book of Proverbs).
Wishing all of you a peaceful Chanukah and Shabbat Shalom!
